Which AI Is Actually Reading Your Website? We Counted 18.9 Million Crawler Visits.

Everyone optimizes for ChatGPT. Our server logs say that is the wrong target. Across nearly 19 million verified AI crawler visits, ChatGPT's bot is a distant third. Claude's crawler does about 70% of the reading - roughly seven visits for every one from GPTBot - and Apple's crawler quietly out-reads OpenAI's too. If you only think about one AI, you are probably thinking about the wrong one.

What 17,800 AI Answers Taught Us About Getting Cited

We expanded our citation research 11-fold: 17,800 real AI answers across hundreds of buying questions, every cited business traced back to its profile. The clearest lesson yet: real-world authority out-predicts on-page polish. The businesses AI names are the ones the web already talks about - and that is something you can build, not something you have to be born with.

Who Does AI Actually Cite? We Checked 1,606 Real Citations.

We pulled the businesses AI answer engines actually name in their answers and looked up how each one scores on AI visibility. Companies scoring 6 or higher were about 8 times more likely to be cited than average. And they are not the giants: 72% of them are mid-sized companies that earned it on their own pages, not on fame.

AI Crawlers Have Already Read 7 in 10 US Businesses. Yours Is Probably One of Them.

We count AI crawler visits server-side across millions of business pages, over 15 million visits logged so far. Matched against our directory of 14 million US businesses, the picture is blunt: about 7 in 10 have already been read by an AI crawler. The reading has largely happened. The open question for most businesses is not whether AI will look, it is what the machines understood when they did.

What Makes AI Crawlers Visit a Business? We Measured 60,000 Cases.

We took 30,000 businesses that AI crawlers read and 30,000 they skipped, matched them on industry and site age, and measured what actually separates the two groups. The answer lives mostly off the website: domain trust doubles the odds, an active Reddit presence adds half again, a mobile app adds a third. The engines decide whether to visit you based on your footprint. What they understand once they arrive is a different battle, fought on your pages.

The Three Questions Every AI Engine Asks About Your Site

Strip away the tooling and the jargon and an AI engine reading your website is trying to answer three questions: who is this business, what does it offer, and where does it operate. Sites that answer all three in plain machine-readable text get used in answers. Sites that make the machine guess get skipped. After deep-reading 14 million business sites, here is how businesses fail each question, and how to stop.

AI Has a Reading List. We Logged 1,537 Businesses That Made It and Never Got Named.

When an AI engine answers a question with web search on, it quietly pulls up a set of pages, reads them, and then names only some of them in its answer. Almost nobody records that middle step. We started logging both sides of it, and the first batch of answer runs surfaced 1,537 businesses that were read while an answer was being written and never got mentioned in one. Being on the reading list is not the prize. It is the audition.

Businesses With a Mobile App Get Read 1.4x More by AI Crawlers

We count every AI crawler visit across millions of business pages, then went looking for what actually predicts whether the bots bother to read you. One signal surprised us and it has nothing to do with your website: businesses with a mobile app were 1.4 times more likely to be read by AI crawlers than near-identical businesses without one. Same industries, same site age. The engines are reading your whole footprint, not just your homepage.

We Deep-Read 14 Million Business Websites. Here Is What Most Are Missing.

Most tools that grade a website for AI count tags: does it have schema, does it have a meta description, does it have an llms.txt file. We rebuilt ours to read the way an engine does, parsing the actual words on the page to ask a harder question: can a machine tell who this business is, what it sells, and where it operates? We ran it across 14 million sites. Most of them fail that test, and not for the reason you would guess.

Republicans vs Democrats: Who Is Winning AI Search? We Scored 1,020 Candidates. Neither.

The 2026 midterms are the first American election where a real share of voters ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity who is running and who to trust. A statistical tie, and a failing grade for both.

Everyone talks about AI crawlers like they are one thing. They are not. We count every AI bot visit, server-side, across 12.9 million business pages we operate, and the census surprised us: three quarters of all AI reading comes from a single crawler, Apple quietly out-reads OpenAI three to one, and the bot from the most citation-happy answer engine barely shows up at all.
