AEO for Home Services and HVAC
Home services work runs on emergencies and recommendations. A burst pipe at 9pm. A heating system that quit during a cold snap. The customer pulls out their phone and asks the AI: "who is good for emergency plumbing in Tucson tonight". The AI returns a name. If that name is yours, you take the job. If not, your competitor does, and you never knew the call happened. This is the new top of funnel for home services. AEO is how you get into it.
The service-area entity problem
Home services businesses have a structural challenge AI engines need help with: you serve an area, not a single address. Your physical office is a dispatch center, not a customer-facing location. LocalBusiness schema handles this with the areaServed property. List your specific service zip codes or city names. If you serve multiple metros, create separate location pages for each metro with location-specific schema. Without this, AI engines will skip you on queries that name a specific town because they cannot tell whether you cover it.
Service schema for every trade you offer
Add Service JSON-LD for each distinct service line. Plumbing, drain cleaning, water heater installation, sewer line repair. Each gets its own Service entity with name, description, areaServed, and provider pointing to your Organization. This sounds redundant. It is exactly what AI engines need to confidently match a user query to your specific capability. The plumbers who get cited for water heater questions are the ones whose schema specifically names water heater service.
Trust signals home services customers actually care about
Licenses, insurance, and warranties. Display your state license number, your bond and insurance status, and any warranty terms in machine-readable form on a credentials or about page. If you are a member of trade associations or have manufacturer certifications (Lennox dealer, Bryant factory authorized, Carrier elite), list them with the year you earned them. AI engines weigh credential signals heavily for trades because customers want to verify trust before letting someone into their home. The brands that surface these signals clearly are the ones that get recommended.
The review velocity flywheel
Set up a post-job text message that sends a Google review link within 24 hours of completion. Set a target: a real review from at least 60 percent of jobs. Reply to every review within a day. After a quarter of disciplined execution, your aggregate review count grows faster than your local competitors. AI engines incorporate review volume and recency as ranking signals. The brand that has 14 reviews this month plus a 4.9 average will outrank the brand with 200 reviews from three years ago and a stale profile.
What to do this week
Three things. First, run a free AEO audit at engagemii.com/aeo to see your starting score. Second, fix the LocalBusiness and Service schema. This is the technical step. A developer or our Fix-It deploy can handle it in a working session. Third, turn on the post-job review request. That part is operational. By the next monthly score check you should see a meaningful lift. Home services is one of the verticals where AEO investment pays back fastest because the queries are high-intent and the competition has not caught up yet.
